What is the purpose of
a Monitoring survey?

What is a Monitoring Survey?

A monitoring survey will detect the movement, if any, of a building or structure progressively over time through 3D laser scanning technology. Red Laser Scanning provides extensive monitoring surveys that will determine any changes to a building or structure. The latest 3D laser scanning technology and equipment, such as laser scanners for scanning the whole structure, Total stations which accurately measure angles and distances, tilt sensors for measurement of angles and send data to a central hub at regular intervals, and Crack Gauges or Monitoring Studs for crack monitoring and detection of motion. Our monitoring surveys can quantify and report the amount of movement and any changes that might have happened over time.

For a building or structure, movement may be triggered by adjacent site ground works, including excavations and drilling works, or result from natural ground movement and settlement over time. This surveying technique is also applicable in monitoring the deflection or deformation of structures due to load, such as a bridge or supporting beam.

Why is Monitoring Survey useful?

In many cases, this type of survey is performed on a structure following the recommendation of a structural engineer upon determining that it is at a risk of moving. The survey will help you notice any early indications of movement by a building or structure to avoid escalation. Conducting a monitoring survey on a building or structure near a heavy construction site, such as basement excavation, piling, or demolition, is appropriate.

Applications of Monitoring Surveys

  • Precise Levelling
Precise levels can monitor the vertical and horizontal movements on the ground. The levels are generally set up on a control point that is used as a benchmark for comparing the changes over time. This is purposefully done to monitor the smallest variations in levels over time, as this technique will show movement, if any.
  • Crack Monitoring
We can identify any movement happening in a building or structure through crack monitoring. The method can apply on existing structures to determine cracking brickwork, pointing or staining to gable ends, and settlement.
  • Noise/Vibration Monitoring Survey
Any noise or vibrations onsite, as determined with the help of a specialist equipment, are a warning of possible problems in a building or structure. A monitoring survey can identify these vibrations and prevent future damages. Monitoring is generally done at set locations over time.
  • Monitoring of Dust Levels
Dust levels can be monitored repeatedly during a construction as part of a project. Also, the survey is generally conducted at set locations around a site of interest over a period of time. Dust measuring devices can help provide comprehensive and accurate results.
