PROCESS OF 3D POINT CLOUD SURVEY EXPLAINED
SITE LASER SCANNING SURVEY
Each of our London laser scanning projects starts with a site visit to undertake a measured building survey using 3D laser scanning equipment. From each location where a 3D scanner operates, it captures millions of 3D points in x, y and z coordinates, in 360 degrees of surface and objects it can see on its way.
3D laser scanning equipment only records everything that is in its visibility, therefore, scans are taken from multiple locations in order to capture data from all sides of the targeted area.
Once a 3D laser survey has been completed, all scans are imported into specialised software, where scans are processed, registered and combined together. The outcome is a point cloud, which is a set of millions of 3D laser points which are combined together in x, y and z axes and represent accurate shapes and forms of real buildings and objects in 3D.
Point clouds are then imported into software like Autodesk Recap, mainly for visualisation purposes such as taking any measurements from a point cloud, virtual tours of scanned data, 360 imagery views and many more. It is a crucial element across all measured building survey services.
These tools are particularly useful to designers and architects as they allow them to eliminate any need for further site visits. At the same time, the point cloud can be imported to CAD or BIM software and be used as a background reference to create accurate and detailed measured building survey drawings, 2D drawings, sections, elevations and 3D models.
